Our school: Historical Review

The 1st Primary School of Plagiari is located in the Municipal District of Plagiari of the Municipality of Thermi. Its first inhabitants came from Plagiari of Eastern Thrace, Neohori and Angelochori or Seitankui and from Gallipoli, Skopo, Vizo, Kavakli, Lapsako, Kamares and from Scholari of Eastern Thrace which was then called Genkio from where the first refugees came. The first refugees arrived between 1914-1918, while almost half returned to Thrace in 1919 to return again in 1922. At the beginning of 1923, the settlement was completed with 170 families. In the area where they settled there used to be a purely Turkish village with a few mud houses called Uzun Ali after the name of its Turkish Commander and all the areas had Turkish names. There were two versions for the name Plagiari. The first is that it was named so because of the peculiarity of the soil and the second that it got this name from the first families who came from Plagiari in Eastern Thrace in 1914. It originally belonged to the Community of Trilofos and in 1931 the initial recognition of the Community of Plagiari was made.

When the first refugees settled, one of their first concerns was to house their church and their school. The first teaching has been done with teamwork since 1923 and housed the children of the community for decades as a two- or three-seat Primary School.

The residential development that begins after the 1978 earthquake in Thessaloniki and the movement of residents to the local community leads to the construction of a second building. The rapid increase in the population leads in 1988 to the construction of a third building. In the 2000s, the existence of the neighboring village of SOS in Plagiari leads to the expansion of the central classroom with new classrooms. In essence, a second building is added to the building that was originally built.

The school’s student population continues to grow and now exceeds 400 students with eighteen (18) classes. Thus, the Primary School of Plagiari in the school year 2018-2019 is divided into two schools, the 1st Primary School of Plagiari with twelve (12) classes and the 2nd Primary School of Plagiari with six (6) classes housed in the three (3) buildings that had been created the previous period.
